Gum Treatment

We know that teeth tend to be the main focus when discussing dental health, but your gums are just as important! The gums play a significant role in maintaining your overall oral health, from providing a home for your teeth and ensuring they are supported.

But, just like our teeth, our gums are susceptible to infection and damage due to poor brushing and flossing habits. At Restore Dental, we offer comprehensive gum treatments to ensure long-lasting dental health.

What are some common gum conditions?

When we have poor oral health, we're not only at risk of developing cavities but gum conditions too. Gum disease or gingivitis, periodontitis and dental abscesses are just a few ways our gums are affected by poor oral hygiene.

Gum disease

Gum disease is a bacterial infection that impacts the gum tissues and bone supporting the teeth. Left untreated, it can develop into a more severe condition that eventually leads to tooth loss.

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease, characterised by inflammation of the gums caused by plaque build-up. Symptoms include red, swollen gums that bleed easily. The condition is still reversible at this stage.

Periodontitis is the advanced stage of gingivitis. Here, the gum pulls away from the teeth, forming pockets that become infected. If not treated, periodontitis can cause tooth loss.

Dental abscesses

A dental abscess is a pocket of pus resulting from a bacterial infection in the mouth. It can form in different areas of the tooth for different reasons and is typically painful.

Abscesses should be treated immediately to avoid letting the infection spread and cause more serious health problems.

How are gum conditions treated?

Our gum treatments are personalised to address the root cause of your condition. We offer professional cleanings to remove plaque and tartar, treating gingivitis and preventing its progression.

For more advanced stages of gum disease, we offer deep, fine scaling. This deep-cleaning method removes bacteria and smoothens the root surfaces to prevent further plaque build-up and promote healing.

Dental abscess treatment, on the other hand, involves draining the abscess and eliminating the infection. This could also include root canal therapy, tooth extraction or periodontal surgery, depending on the severity of the condition.

In some cases, we may provide a referral for specialist treatment.

How can I keep my gums healthy?

Looking after your gums is essential! Luckily, the same way you look after your teeth is how you'll keep your gums nice and pristine.

Ensure you follow these guidelines:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste

  • Floss daily, especially after meals

  • Have regular dental check-ups and cleanings

  • Avoid smoking

  • Eat a balanced diet

With a holistic and preventative approach to dentistry, our effective treatment options will help you restore your health and smile.
